Should you watch it? Sasami@ganbaranai

So every once in a while an animé like Sasami@ganbaranai pops up, an animé that creates an interest just from its own strangeness and when we are talking animé and strangeness you know that when something is strange in an animé it’s really strange…(did I mention it was strange).

In Sasami@ganbaranai we follow Sasami Tsukyoumi who seems to live the easiest life possible with her brother taking care of everything from clothing her , feeding her, drying her after a bath….to heck…even brushing her teeth. She in return seems to do nothing but spend time shopping on her computer and playing games instead of going to school although we get a reason for why she can’t go to school fairly quickly, while she doesn’t have the smugness of your traditional ojou-sama character she exhibits more of an apathy towards her everyday life making her slightly interesting as a character but nothing that pops out.Her brother on the other does seem somewhat interesting.

Her brother whose first name we have not yet learned is at first appearance a mechanical character someone with no face or interesting dialogue whose sole purpose is to enable Sasami as a character, this where the show diverges from the norm, while they are yet to show his face they do give him a central part in the story and some humoristic dialogue with the traditional yearning for his little sisters love sprinkled in there.

In addition to Sasami there are three sisters of Tsurugi family who all seems to have super powers “mecha-battle-boobs” and all. In the first episode we don’t get to learn much about them beyond their abilities.

Now where the story and dialogue may be lacklustre the art style and production value of the show makes up for it. The show seems to be animated with some type lucid water colour style that doesn’t drag away from the characters and makes every frame and setting a joy to watch and I will also praise the insanely smooth transitions they make setting to setting for reference check the chocolate scene in episode 1.The character design for each character is also something I’d like to praise Sasami looks unique with her hair and her sleeping gown the tsurugi sisters each have distinct and recognisable looks instead of the standard animé clone, while I am sure they look like a lot of other characters from other animés the art style separates them and makes them feel unique for it.  It is a little sad that the story isn’t better because the writing and comedy displayed in the episodes so far are spot on and feels a bit wasted on the current overall story.

Now overall I think that to truly enjoy this show you must see it for what it is, as you might have noticed from the text, the show is very haphazardly and loose in it’s context since the story is just a front so we can get some super well animated battle sequences and moé moé fan-service. It’s hard to sympathize with any of the characters as they are right now but following the laws of animé we will go through everyone’s character arc and hopefully like them better for it.

I will spoil a little bit about the story though, this seems to be one few animé who openly admits that brother-sister-inappropriateness is indeed blood related and not some cluster fuck of adoption. Other than that there isn’t much to say but that Sasami@ganbaranai is beautiful, funny and “cool” show to watch but with a weak story so far that makes everything else awesome about it seems kinda wasted. So should you watch it?

Yes! The story seems to be shaping up so I am cautiously optimistic about it and if it does shape up this might be one of the best animés this season¨.

Anime Winter Season 2013 Recommendations – Love Live!

I know, I know, I know. Anyone who has read about Love Live! pretty much say the same thing, it’s a shallow show about a bunch of girls who becomes idols to save their school…lame. I went in thinking the same thing and I was wrong, sort of. The shows premise is pretty much as I’ve described it. Honoka is you average second year high school girl (aren’t they all?) who goes about her daily life with her friends untill they hear the terrible news about their school closing down due to the low number of new applicants. While this actually doesn’t effect her in the slightest because all the current attendants will be allowed to graduate, she still feels a need to save school. To do this she investigates various ways to increase the number of applicants until she stumbles upon one method that seems to be a tie breaker from many young girls namely, the concept of School Idols. Now so far I know it sounds very bland and generic and….it is, however while the premise might sound bland and boring the execution of it is very well done.

Each character while in no way unique are still memorable and will give you a laugh or two the story seems to have a feel-good-underdog-rise to-the-top-feel of it and probably won’t offer much in the way of conflict except the occasional diet until you pass out and generic girl insecurity issues… oh and parents who want you to take over there rocket selling business or something.

Where the show really shines though is in it’s animation, being a show about idols there will be a lot of dancing and while you can clearly see that the dance animation was made in a 3rd party animation program it is still the smooth transition from static animation to  dance. The songs they “create” are your typical j-pop idol music, catchy and on occasion memorable in combination with good choreography.

As for characters…there are going to be a lot of them as they need one character to cover every aspect of a live concert so costume, music, director and so on. One thing the show aims to do is to show how hard it is being an idol with everything from multitasking of being able to smile and nail every move to music creation to (I hope) dealing with crazy otaku fans this is where the show breaks out from its premise and shows some much needed heart.

This show is clearly trying to get a piece of K-on cake but completely misses the point, heck some of the characters are almost rip-offs of K-on character i.e the black haired, up tight, sort of leader of the band ,who writes lyrics she is embarrassed over. When making this show they must have thought that, “Hey, if we take the same concept, but idols instead and thus increase the number of moé girls we can have more people will watch!”. While that is true to some extent I probably would’ve enjoyed a more focused show.

I know it seems like I’ve done nothing but excrete faecal matter all over the show but it holds a lot of potential and if nothing else it’s one of those shows that you watch because the animation is so damn good. I recommend this show to anyone who has the time for it or simple like the idol concept.

P.S If anyone understands the reason behind having pinkish knees on all the girls feel free to leave a comment.
